1. Question: Can you share the story behind the inception of Jungle Direct and how your personal background influenced its creation?

Answer: Jungle Direct was founded out of my deep connection to Ghana, where I was born and raised on a farm before migrating to Australia. Having been fortunate enough to receive an education in the West, I felt compelled to give back to my culture and family in Ghana. With a heritage of importing African products for over 30 years and a passion for sustainable goods, I established Jungle Direct to celebrate Ghana’s weaving tradition while supporting local communities.

2. Question: What distinguishes Jungle Direct baskets from other products, and what materials are utilised in their construction?

Answer: Jungle Direct baskets are unique for their craftsmanship and sustainable materials. Handmade by skilled weavers in Ghana, these baskets are woven from Elephant grass, a resilient reed native to West Africa. Harvested and processed by the Fra Fra people of Northern Ghana, these grasses are transformed into supple, durable fibres, resulting in baskets that are both beautiful and environmentally friendly.

3. Question: Could you elaborate on the challenges Jungle Direct faced, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, and how you navigated through them?

Answer: Undoubtedly, the COVID-19 pandemic presented significant obstacles for Jungle Direct, including shipping disruptions, currency fluctuations, and the impact of regional floods. However, through resilience and adaptability, we persevered. We postponed our initial trade show until conditions improved and remained committed to supporting Fair Trade principles and local communities amidst adversity.

4. Question: How does Jungle Direct contribute to Fair Trade practices and support the communities in Ghana?

Answer: At Jungle Direct, we are deeply committed to Fair Trade principles and maintaining longstanding relationships with our suppliers and local community charities in Ghana. Proceeds from our sales directly benefit these communities, with initiatives ranging from raising funds to build school infrastructure to supporting Ghanaian farmers and artisans. By prioritising ethical sourcing and Fair Trade practices, we ensure that our products not only uphold the time-honoured craft of weaving but also empower the people behind them.

5. Question: What future plans does Jungle Direct have, and how do you envision the company evolving in the coming years?

Answer: Looking ahead, Jungle Direct is committed to expanding our product range and exploring new markets. In addition to our iconic baskets, we are introducing luxury hammocks from Brazil and exploring opportunities to offer more sustainable products. Our goal is to continue raising awareness of Ghana’s weaving tradition while advancing Fair Trade practices and community development initiatives.

6. Question: Could you share some insights into the design process behind Jungle Direct products and your collaboration with artisans in Ghana?

Answer: Absolutely. At Jungle Direct, we work closely with artisans in Ghana to design unique products that reflect both traditional craftsmanship and contemporary aesthetics. We visit these communities regularly, fostering relationships and ensuring fair working conditions. Our collaborative approach not only honours Ghana’s weaving heritage but also promotes cultural exchange and mutual respect.
